Online Personality Tests

Take a few minutes to look over the options linked below. Choose one or two different personality related tests to take. Also, look at the BBC site to find three or four tests that look interesting to you.

If you are completing this exercise in class, take your time with the tests.  You should only visit the sites linked in this post while completing this assignment.  After completing this assignment, you should understand the personality types discussed in class a little better.  Please take as much time as you need to explore the sites, but do leave yourself 10-20 minutes to create your written responses.  Remember that for the most part, these tests are for entertainment purposes so be careful about trusting the results.

When you finish, describe the tests that you took and explain your thoughts on the experience. (Was it fun, interesting, useless, accurate, way off base, etc.?)  Be sure to let me know what you think about the reliability and validity of the tests you chose to take.  You may respond by typing and printing your response, handwriting a response, or use the comment feature below (if you do this, only use your first name and class period to identify yourself).

Here are the personality related tests you can choose from:

The Big Five (Traits) Personality Test

Shyness Test

Find Your Star Wars Twin

Another Big Five Test (This One is Prettier)

How Unique Are You ?

Morality Test

This site is run by the BBC.  You will find a number of different psychological tests relating to various subjects on this page:    BBC Psychology Tests

  2. The tests were okay. They were long which made me feel that I would get an accurate answer. I feel that some of the percents were a bit off, but other than that there was nothing else really wrong with them.

  3. I thought the fake smile test was the most interesting and insightful. I ended up doing better than most, but still got 5 out of 20 wrong, proving its difficult to spot when someone is fibbing. The test explained how different muscles are used between real and fake, and can be useful information for me to use when interacting with people.

  4. The tests were interesting and entertaining to take, but I felt that the actual process of taking the test was more revealing than the results. Though the results seemed to be a moderately good indicator of general personality traits, I felt that answering the questions, (especially when I felt I should answer one way even though another answer was more true) was a better personal indication of one's personality. Overall, I do not think the tests should be used as anything other than for getting a general understanding of the personality traits, and for a few minutes of entertainment.

  5. I’m glad to learn that I’m not neurotic - I’m in the 9th percentile, which is a satisfyingly low number in terms of neuroticism. I’m in the 96th percentile for Openness, which is good because I plan on being a designer since I have fun solving problems and coming up with new ideas. Overall I found the quiz matched me well, especially concerning my messy desk. The Necker cube test interested me, because I turned the cube 39 times when the scale only went to 20. I know introverts are supposed to be faster at performing mental tasks - but I don’t consider myself that introverted, at least in most situations. I also did well at detecting smiles, but that may be because I’ve watched and listened to many podcasts about microexpressions and lie detection because, hey, it’s pretty cool stuff.

  6. Most of the quizzes that I took reflected my personality in my opinion. I got constant results for each quiz. The quizzes we took may not have been as helpful as full scientific tests but they gave some insight to a more broad personality. The BBC quizzes maybe were more scientific, particularly the art and personality quiz because I got exact answers and was able to compare and contrast to my sex and age group and personality.

  7. I found that these psychology tests were fun, but I don't know of any uses for them. They didn't seem to be extremely valid, and there could be many problems with some of the questions. I feel that these are fun to have and try, but not helpful for knowledge. They can't diagnose psychological problems either.

  8. I thought these tests reflected my personality, or how I view my personality, quite accurately. The big five tests said I was balanced or "average" in all 5 areas. I liked the BBC tests because I was able to compare my answers to other people in my age group and other demographics. I liked the Spot the fake smile test the best, its harder than I thought to tell a real smile than a fake one.

  9. I took the first "Big 5" test and the "Shyness Test." Also, I took the morality test in Mr. Hankins class. On all of the tests, I consistently scored pretty average, scoring between 4(0) and 6(0). The assessments are seemingly legit; I would refer to myself as overall pretty average, not too extreme in any specific field. Tests similar to these usually are subjective to the answerer, and therefore, could produce unreliable results if they do not give true answers. Nevertheless, if you answer quickly and according to how you truly feel, these tests are a good measure of your characteristics. I am not entirely sure how this is supposed to be interpreted: What this is supposed to reveal about the person we are. Perhaps, it does not have a meaningful affect unless you stray from the average field, allowing you to notice where you are 'extreme'.

  10. I found these test very interesting. I didn't think I would get what I got on the tests. I thought I would score lower on the Big 5, to of my scores were in the above average categories. I don't think that some of the other tests are valid because I scored higher on some tests and lower on others. Some of the different tests had some of the same questions that the others had. I would answer the same thing on these same questions but I would get different results.

  11. I thought these tests were relatively accurate, especially the star wars one. I always knew that C-3P0 and I were twins. The first test that I took, on the Big 5, was also accurate, but did not show preferences as strong as the star wars one did. I think this might be a result of there being more options to reply with; this might have given me an ability to answer with more averageness. The star wars test gave me fewer answer choices, and therefore I might have picked the more extreme answer more often. Tim and I also did the smile test, where we got 14 right, and I'm blaming Tim for the remaining 6.

  12. I took “The Big Five (Traits) Personality Test” and “How Unique Are you?” tests. Both tests consisted of ranking various statements with a numerical value varying from Disagree to Agree, but the former had a larger scale (1-9) and asked one to rank various qualities, whereas the latter had a scale of (1-5) and asked rankings on statements about conformity and fitting into society. Overall, I scored consistently on the high part of average or the low part of the high categories for the traits test, which is probably consistent with what most people score. Most people tend to think of themselves as average. In addition, my uniqueness test listed me as not need to feeling very unique or to be a noncomformist, as well as typically respectful when disagreeing. I feel that if there are no immediate concerns in one's environment or family life, most people will not generally feel a need to be unique or stand out to gain attention. Also, the willingness to disagree statement can generally be applied to everyone. These tests are pretty interesting and probably valid in that they do test your uniqueness and personality traits, but are probably not very reliable.

  13. These tests are somewhat correct about my personality. I prefer traditional and familiar experiences especially in school when I have to do classwork. I am neither particularly social or reserved. I am talkative depending on who I am with, for example, if i'm with my guy friends i usually talk without thinking it over in my head. When I'm with girls, i usually watch what i say so that I'm not rude. In school work, sports, and in games I criticize a lot because of my competitiveness. I always have to win and if i lose, i usually criticize other people in my team to make myself think that it wasnt my fault. I remain calm even in intense situations because i am mostly careless of what goes on in my life.

  14. While these tests were very accurate, I didn't find the results to be particularly relevant. The results for both the Big 5 tests and the Shyness test were all presented in numerical form, giving me a percentage rather than an evaluation. The numbers didn't really reveal much about my personality because they were all within the so-called "average" range. The first Big 5 test gave me the most accurate results, despite the lack of detail. I liked the BBC tests a lot better as they seemed to be more informative and you could compare your results with others.

  15. I got a 7.06 on the independence test, which I think is a little low because I am very independent in almost everything I do, and a 4 on the interdependent, which seems pretty high for me, so I think the test isn't pretty reliable, but not completely valid. The Star Wars test was a fun, interesting way to find out about my personality, because you actually had something that you could relate the results to, and I think it was pretty reliable and pretty valid, though the validity really depends on the test-taker's mood at the time. I did well on the fake smiles test, considering all you really had to do was look at the eyes to tell if the person was faking or not. The disgust test was really weird, but still interesting to take, and the insights to the answers were interesting to read too and sounded pretty valid.

  16. I found that the personality tests were generally true, but I think that it is difficult to have a completely accurate personality test because there are so many aspects to a person, many of which can be situational. Overall, the tests gave me consistent results that I agree with. They were correct in the sense that I am an outgoing person who is happy most of the time, then many of the other responses were somewhere along the lines of "you are neither ____ nor ______" (which I guess is also true? I'm not either of the extremes).

  17. The longer and more diverse tests gave a much better judgement of my personality than the short, fun, one-sided tests. The Morality Test was the longest and gave an answer that seemed to apply closest to my life, even if i didn't agree with the result at first. They are interesting to take one or two times, and gave a reliable result for me. I think the validity, in terms of predicting what a person will be like in the future, is skewed because it is taken only at one point in time. I was having a fairly bad day, so the tests gave me a much more introverted, neurotic score than in the past.

  18. I found the three "Big 5" tests to be very consistent with each other and also with my own opinion of my personality. I really liked the fake smile test, I only missed 2 out of 20. The tests were fun, interesting, useful, and pretty accurate. I would trust the validity and reliability of at least the three "Big 5" tests-they seem very comprehensive.

  19. I think that the personality tests were somewhat accurate, and I got the results I expected, but they were all very similar and asked the same questions. I would like to see the tests with a better variation of questions so I know it is analyzing more aspects of my personality. I have taken the morality test before and received the same results which shows consistency.

  20. I thought the tests reflected my own opinion of my personality very well. However, I think that if I had a different perception of myself, my results would come out radically different, even if I wasn't a different person. Because of this, I already knew the results I was going to get. There were no big shockers. That's why I'm a little wary of these personality tests. All the testes can do is reflect your own perception of yourself, rather than the way you are perceived, which seems to be the one most people are interested to find out. I was interested by the test that decided if you associate numbers with colors. Apparently, my tendency to do this is strong. However, more often than not, I associate the numbers with personalities and then these personalities with colors. I wonder if there is a test for that...

  21. I thought the tests were accurate for the most part, but it is difficult to believe the exact percentages because the tests were not all that extensive. A longer test would be impractical unless it was being used for a more specific purpose than just curiosity, so perhaps the tests should use a different scale. I liked how the morality test had short answer because then the participants could elaborate more upon their points, which could then take situation into account. Short answer, however, can a problem for objective analyses. The shyness test results didn't seem to test what they were supposed to. It should be called an independence test, because it is possible to be both interdependent and shy.

  22. I took the Star Wars character test as well as the smile test. I thought that it was pretty accurate since I was most like C3PO and he is a beast. I addition, it said that I was more introverted and shy, which is true, but not to the extent that the test claimed. I received a score of 17/20 on the smile test which I was surprised by. I did not think I could spot fake smiles that easily, but I'm not sure that test is very reliable because a lot of the smiles seemed obviously fake. Overall, while the results of the personality tests were in line with my personality (not the smile test), I don't think they can accurately predict what a person can be like.

I think the tests are accurate to some degree, how ever they will not pin a point a person down all the way. I took the Prettier Big Five personality test, some of the results I got back were accurate while others were way off. This test could be used to get a general idea of what a group of people are like.

  24. I think the morality test was the only one that offered any useful information to me, because it was the only one that actually described what it perceived me to be.

  25. These tests might show some degree of accuracy for me, but I can't imagine that they are anywhere near perfect representations of my personality. I don't think I'm very good at objectively analyzing myself on these types of surveys, so they're probably not very useful overall. The results I got don't seem too far off from how I view myself, but the problem is that I'm not sure that the way I view myself is accurate.

  26. Overall, these tests are good for examining one's general personality but do not provide enough sources of information to formulate a near perfect personality profile. For the most part the tests were about the same to how I view my own personality. The first big five test could be a bit more accurate if the personality traits were described in more detail as some can be interpreted to have multiple meanings.

  27. I thought the accurately described my personality. After taking multiple tests, each one said I had approximately the same personality. The tests have inherent in bias in that the person taking them will not want to admit their own negative personality tests. It's difficult to evaluate the validity of the tests.

  28. I did the Big Five personality and the morality test. I would say that some of the results were true but not all of them were accurate. In terms of usefulness, I would say it gave me a pretty good idea on how moralistic I am according to the questions but not in situations. I think it would be more accurate to tell someone's personality when one is put in a situation

  29. I'm seeing that most of your responses indicate that:
    1) You believe that your personality is influenced more by situation than these tests allow for
    2) Any true measure can't be found within the short, forced choice framework and
    3) The fact that you are self-reporting makes the results a little suspect.

Thanks for your responses (online and printed) I hope that you were able to think about personality and testing in a different way by taking these tests and reflecting on them.
